Named after Ahmad Shah I. A corruption of Classical Persian اَحْمَدْآبَاد (ahmad'ābād), a compound of اَحْمَد (ahmad) + ـآبَاد (-ābād, “placename suffix”).[1] This corruption involves a lenition from /b/ to /ʋ/ in the placename suffix.
