Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀅𑀁𑀟 (aṃḍa), from Sanskrit अण्डम् (aṇḍam), nominative singular neuter of अण्ड (aṇḍa). Doublet of અંડ (aṇḍa, testicle, ovum). Cognate with Hindustani انڈا / अंडा (aṇḍā), Konkani अंडें (aṇḍẽ), Marathi अंडे (aṇḍe), Sindhi آنو / आनो (āno).
