Inherited from Prakrit 𑀞𑀡𑁆𑀠 (ṭhaṇḍha, “cold, blunted”), from 𑀞𑀟𑁆𑀠 (ṭhaḍḍha, “sluggish, slow”) with contamination of -ṇ- from a derivative of Proto-Dravidian *taṇ (“cold”), from 𑀣𑀤𑁆𑀥 (thaddha, “firm, fixed”) with retroflexion, from Sanskrit स्तब्ध (stabdha, “firm, stiff”),[1] from Proto-Indo-Iranian *stabdʰás, from Proto-Indo-European *stebʰ-tós, with semantic shift. Cognate with Kashmiri थंड् (thaṃḍ), Bengali ঠান্ডা (ṭhanḍa), Nepali ठण्डा (ṭhaṇḍā), Hindi ठंड (ṭhaṇḍ), Marathi थंड (thaṇḍa).
