નિશાળ
Gujarati
Etymology
Uncertain. Turner proposes three etymologies, all of which agree that the second element is from Sanskrit शाला (śālā):
- Inherited from Sanskrit *नयशाला (*nayaśālā), from नय (naya, “conduct, plan”) + शाला (śālā, “shed, stable, house”).[1]
- Inherited from Sanskrit *नीतिशाला (*nītiśālā), from नीति (nīti, “conduct”) + शाला (śālā, “shed, stable, house”).[2]
- First attested in 1585 Old Gujarati नेसाल (nesāla), which is derived from the earlier लेसाल (lesāla), first attested in 1355. Inherited from Sanskrit लेखशाला (lekhaśālā, “writing school”).[3][4]
