નિશાળ

Gujarati

Etymology

Uncertain. Turner proposes three etymologies, all of which agree that the second element is from Sanskrit शाला (śālā):

  • Inherited from Sanskrit *नयशाला (*nayaśālā), from नय (naya, conduct, plan) +‎ शाला (śālā, shed, stable, house).[1]
  • Inherited from Sanskrit *नीतिशाला (*nītiśālā), from नीति (nīti, conduct) +‎ शाला (śālā, shed, stable, house).[2]
  • First attested in 1585 Old Gujarati नेसाल (nesāla), which is derived from the earlier लेसाल (lesāla), first attested in 1355. Inherited from Sanskrit लेखशाला (lekhaśālā, writing school).[3][4]
