Inherited from Prakrit *𑀧𑁂𑀝𑁆𑀝 (*pĕṭṭa), possibly from Proto-Dravidian *peṭṭi.[1] Cognate with Marathi पेटी (peṭī), Sinhalese පෙට්ටිය (peṭṭiya).
