From Proto-Tai *klɤlᴬ (“to snore”).[1] The Thai form aberrantly has / -r-/ instead of the expected /-l-/.[2]

Cognate with Ahom 𑜁𑜤𑜃𑜫 (khun), Lao ກົນ (kon), ຂົນ (khon), Isan โกน, Shan ၶူၼ် (khǔun), Zhuang gyaen, Nong Zhuang zaen (as in noanzzaen).
