Etymology

ดิน (din, “soil”) +‎ สอ (sɔ̌ɔ, “white”). In ancient times, people used white "ดินสอ" (marl, that is now called ดินสอพอง) to write on slate. Later, western traders brought graphite sticks to write on paper. Therefore, the graphite sticks are called "ดินสอ" as well.
