From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ˀduːtᴰ¹ᴸ (“to suck”). Cognate with Lao ດູດ (dūt), Lü ᦡᦳᧆᧈ (ḋud¹), Shan လုတ်ႇ (lùt) and ႁုတ်ႇ (hùt), Tai Nüa ᥘᥧᥖᥴ (lút), Phake ꩫုတ် (nut, “to smoke”) and ꩭုတ် (hut, “to suck”), Ahom 𑜓𑜤𑜄𑜫 (dut), Zhuang ndoet, Nong Zhuang ndut or ndit.
