Inherited from Proto-Tai *ɗuəŋꟲ (coconut grub).[1]

Compare Middle Chinese (MC drjuwng, “insect; bug”).

Cognate with Northern Thai ᨯ᩠ᩅ᩶ᨦ, Lao ດ້ວງ (dūang), ᦷᦡᧂᧉ (ḋong²), Zhuang nduengj in nonnduengj (pupa) (dialectal).
