From Proto-Tai *daːᴬ,[1] from Middle Chinese 塗 (MC drae, “smear”).
Cognate with Northern Thai ᨴᩤ, Lao ທາ (thā), Lü ᦑᦱ (taa), Tai Dam ꪕꪱ, Shan တႃး (táa), Ahom 𑜄𑜠 (ta), Zhuang daz.
