From นคร (ná-kɔɔn, “city”) +‎ นา (naa, “rice field”) +‎ ยก (yók, “to exempt; to cancel”); literally "city of exempted rice fields"; after the fact that the rice fields in this city were exempted from taxes during the Ayutthaya period.[1]
