From Pali sapatha (“oath; swearing”); possibly via Old Khmer spota, spot, spotta, spipāṭa, ssapāṭa, *śapatha (“to swear; to vow; to pledge; to take an oath”) or Angkorian Old Khmer śapatha, śapata, śapatta (idem). Cognate with Modern Khmer ស្បថ (sbɑt).
