From Proto-Southwestern Tai *sumᴮ¹ (“trap; fish trap; coop”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩈᩩ᩵ᨾ, Khün ᩈᩩ᩵ᨾ, ᩈᩪ᩵ᨾ, Lao ສຸ່ມ (sum), Lü ᦉᦳᧄᧈ (ṡum¹), Tai Dam ꪎꪴ꪿ꪣ, Shan သုမ်ႇ (sùm), Tai Nüa ᥔᥧᥛᥱ (sǔm), Phake ꩬုံ (suṃ), Ahom 𑜏𑜤𑜪 (suṃ).
