Etymology
From Proto-Tai *nɯːŋᴮ (“one”).[1]
In Southwestern Tai, cognate with Northern Thai ᨶᩧ᩠᩵ᨦ, Lao ໜຶ່ງ (nưng) or ນຶ່ງ (nưng), Lü ᦓᦹᧂᧈ (nueng¹), Shan ၼိုင်ႈ (nūeng), Aiton လိုင် (lüṅ), Ahom 𑜎𑜢𑜤𑜂𑜫 (lüṅ).
In other Tai, cognate with Zuojiang Zhuang nwengq (Ningming dialect)[2] or nwengh (Longzhou and Daxin dialects)[2] or nwngh (Longzhou and Daxin dialect)[2] or nwng (Longzhou dialect).[2]

- When forming part of a compound number, this number is generally pronounced เอ็ด (èt), not หนึ่ง (nʉ̀ng). For example, ๒๑ ("21") is pronounced ยี่สิบเอ็ด (yîi-sìp-èt), not ยี่สิบหนึ่ง (yîi-sìp-nʉ̀ng). Pronouncing หนึ่ง (nʉ̀ng) is often found in military usage to distinguish เอ็ด (èt) from เจ็ด (jèt, “seven”).
