From Proto-Tai *hapᴰ (“to close”),[1] from Middle Chinese 闔 (MC hap, “to close; to shut”) or 合 (MC hop, “idem”).
Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉᩢ᩠ᨷ, Lao ຫັບ (hap), Shan ႁပ်း (háp), Zhuang haep.
