From Proto-Southwestern Tai *sɤkᴰ (“enemy”),[1] from Old Chinese 賊 (OC *zɯːɡ, “thief; bandit”).[1] Cognate with Thai ศึก (sʉ̀k), Northern Thai ᩈᩮᩥᩢ᩠ᨠ, Lao ເສິກ (sœk), Lü ᦵᦉᦲᧅ (ṡoek), Shan သိုၵ်း (súek), Ahom 𑜏𑜢𑜤𑜀𑜫 (sük).
