ไล่ออก • (lâi-ɔ̀ɔk) (abstract noun การไล่ออก)

1. to expel, especially as a penalty.

• Because the verb is formed with the main verb, ไล่ (lâi, “to drive”) in the front, and the adverb, ออก (ɔ̀ɔk, “out”), in the back, the verb is used by placing the object in the middle, as in ไล่พนักงานออก (lâi pá-nák-ngaan ɔ̀ɔk, “to fire an official”). It is linguistically incorrect to place the object after ออก (ɔ̀ɔk), as in ไล่ออกพนักงาน (lâi-ɔ̀ɔk pá-nák-ngaan), although this usage is often found in journalism.
