Etymology
རྗེ (rje, “lord, master, ruler”) + བླས (blas), where བླས (blas) is an ancient form of modern ལས (las, “work, deed”). For the loss of the labial consonant, compare དཀའ་ལས (dka' las), pronounced /kap⁵ lɛ⁵⁵/ in Ngari Tibetan and /kʰapʰlas/ in Balti.[1]
