Probably from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *kriŋ (“hair on the head; thread; sinew, tendon”), assuming an original sense of "long thin thread-like object", as in ဆံခြည် (hcamhkrany, “strand of hair”). Compare Akha kháŋ (“hair”) (STEDT); note also similarities to Old Chinese 腱 (OC *kan, *ɡans, “tendon”), which appears to be compared by STEDT, though the finals do not seem to match.
