Burmese
Pronunciation
- IPA(key): /soʊʔ/
- Romanization: MLCTS: cut • ALA-LC: cutʻ • BGN/PCGN: sok • Okell: souʔ
- Homophone: စုပ် (cup)
Etymology 1
From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *m-dzj(u/i)t (“to tear, rip”); cognate with Lahu [Term?] (jɨ̀ʔ, “to tear something”) (STEDT). Said root appears to be allofamically related to Proto-Tibeto-Burman *9d)ziːt ~ *(t)siːt (“to split”), the latter whence Tibetan ཟེད (zed, “broken off, damaged, injured”) and Jingpho [script needed] (šìt, “to split lengthwise”). Note also similarities with these roots to Old Chinese 撕 (OC *seː, *se, “to tear, shred, rip”).
