The "witch" sense is not given etymology by STEDT (cûn "wizard, conjuror") and not mentioned by Luce 1981. That said, compare perhaps with Jingpho sawn (“witch spirit; malicious female nat”) and Old Chinese 仙 (OC *sen, “immortal being, sage”).

The "bright" sense is grouped with the "witch" sense by MED, perhaps as both evoke "extraordinary, shining" connotations. Otherwise, it has traditionally been thought to be derived from Pali juṇha (“moonlight”), itself from Sanskrit ज्योत्स्ना (jyótsnā, “moonlight, splendor”).
