From Proto-Karen *chjaNᴮ (sour),[1] from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-kjuːr ~ *s-kjwaːr (sour; to be acid). Cognate with Bwe Karen ʃɪ, Pa'o Karen ဆျာႏ, Western Kayah ꤏꤛꤢꤩ꤬ (hsyè).
