Etymology 1
From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *ʔcwat (“to pluck”); compare Lahu cɨ̂ʔ (“to pluck”), as well, as, outside of Lolo-Burmese, Old Chinese 撮 (OC *ʔsoːd, *sʰoːd, “to pinch, pick up with the fingers”) (STEDT), 絕 (OC *zod, “to cut off, sever”) (Hill, 2019).
