From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g/l-t(y)ap (“to fold, repeat, layer, pile up”). Cognate with Old Chinese 疊 (OC *l'ɯːb, “to fold, double, accumulate”) (STEDT thap "place one on another, add to; repeat, do again").

The "again" sense is an adverbialization of the "stack" sense, and the "classifier" sense a semantic extension of the "stack" sense.
