Cognate with Rakhine ထဲ; further cognates outside of Burmish uncertain. Not given etymology by STEDT (ə-thâi "inside, inner part of thing"), while Luce's comparison with Old Chinese 在 (OC *zlɯːʔ, *zlɯːs, “at”) appears phonetically dubious.[1]
