Etymology

According to MED, from နီး (ni:, “near”) +‎ ပါး (pa:, “thin, sharp, sparse”), though STEDT instead derives the second component from a Proto-Lolo-Burmese *ba² (“nearby place, vicinity”), whence Lahu pa³ (“near”); see also အပါး (a.pa:, “vicinity”) (STEDT).
