The "knead" sense is from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *m/s-naːy (to twist, knead, soften), while the "sticky" sense is from the related Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s/ʔ-n(w)ay (cohesive, sticky, elastic). Compare Jingpho mə nai (to twist), Akha nɛ̀ (tough, chewy) (STEDT). Note also vague similarities to Old Chinese (OC *nem, “sticky”).
