Etymology 2
The "knead" sense is from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *m/s-naːy (“to twist, knead, soften”), while the "sticky" sense is from the related Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s/ʔ-n(w)ay (“cohesive, sticky, elastic”). Compare Jingpho mə nai (“to twist”), Akha nɛ̀ (“tough, chewy”) (STEDT). Note also vague similarities to Old Chinese 粘 (OC *nem, “sticky”).
