From Proto-Karen *p-ˀdɛᴬ (“rabbit”) (Luangthongkum 2019), cognate with Western Pwo ပဒဲၩ, ultimately borrowed from Austroasiatic (Luce 1985); compare, for example, Mon ဗတဲာ.
