Etymology

From Proto-Karen *p/b-naᴮ (buffalo). Cognate with Bwe Karen bəne, Eastern Pwo ပၞာႋ (pnā), Pa'o Karen ပနား, Western Pwo ပနါ. Luce (1985) notes a connection with Palaungic; compare Proto-Palaungic *mənaːʔ(Appendix:Proto-Palaungic reconstructions), whence Danau ပနာအ် (pənàʔ), မနာအ် (mənàʔ).
