ပုဆိုး

Burmese

Etymology

Treated as atomic by MED, and not mentioned by STEDT. Component-wise, analyzable as ပု (pu., uncertain prefix) +‎ ဆိုး (hcui:, to dye, stain (dyed cloth)).

Regarding the identity of the first component, ပု (pu.) is often a shortened form of ပိုး (pui:, worm, silk) as in ပုရွက် (pu.rwak) and ပုစဉ်း (pu.cany:). The 'silk' sense might be reflected better in the Old Burmese coordinate term ပုခြည် (pu.hkrany, a type of tunic or fabric worn during the Bagan period).[1] Otherwise, it may have been an anatomical indicator; as in ပုဆစ် (pu.hcac, knee).

Some traditional Burmologists derive the second component from ဆီး (hci:, to wear, to bar) so as to match the semantic development of ထဘီ (hta.bhi); however, this is unlikely.[2]
