Apparently from a Proto-Lolo-Burmese *bi¹ (anvil), though it has been speculated that the word is a borrowing into Lolo-Burmese from some unidentified language, due to the irregular correspondence between the Burmese form and Lahu [Term?] (pì-tɛ, idem) (STEDT).
