From Proto-Karen *ˀbaŋᴮ (bamboo shoot), from Austroasiatic (Luce 1985), compare Proto-Palaungic *ɓaŋ (Appendix:Proto-Palaungic reconstructions), Mon က္ၜၚ်. Cognate with Eastern Pwo ၜင်း (báɴ), Western Pwo ဝၪဘၪ့.
