According to MED, from မ (ma., “not”) +‎ နိုင် (nuing, “to win, be able”) +‎ ရင် (rang, “breast”) +‎ ကန် (kan, “(meaning unclear)”). The interpretation of the compound is uncertain, but the first two syllables suggest "cannot", the third "someone intimate", and the fourth may invoke either the "designate" or "kick, shove off" sense (more likely the latter), thus "one whose breast cannot be shoved off".
