From Proto-Tibeto-Burman *s-rjut (“to grow worse; inferior, fallen”). Compare Tibetan རུད (rud, “falling (mass)”) (STEDT), as well as perhaps, per Luce 1981, Old Chinese 劣 (OC *rod, “puny, inferior”).
