Etymology

STEDT considers the first syllable, လင်း (lang:) (not in its usual senses), to derive from a Proto-Sino-Tibetan *g-lja(ŋ/k) (“python”), citing Lahu lɛ̂ (“python”) and Old Chinese 蟒 (OC *maːŋʔ, “python”) as cognates. The second syllable, နို့ (nui.), is left unglossed, but may invoke the "breast, milk" sense, as bats are known to be mammals with milk.
