Etymology

From Proto-Karen *bəŋᴬ (pot). Cognate with Eastern Pwo ဖိုင် (phə̀ɴ), Pa'o Karen ဖွိုင်ꩻ, Western Kayah ꤕꤟꤢꤪ꤬ (pò̤a), Western Pwo ဖျိၪ. Luce (1985) provisionally lists သပၢၤ as a “pure” Karen word whose origin cannot be traced outside of the Karen languages.[1]
