Etymology

Both senses are derived by STEDT from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *ha(ː)k (to hawk, gag, choke), likely of partially-onomatopoeic origin similar to that of English hawk. Compare Mizo [Term?] (hâak, to swallow the wrong way or so as to choke; to catch one's breath).
