Perhaps from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *r(u/i)m (dark; shade; dusk; twilight); compare Old Chinese (OC *qrɯm, “overcast”) (whence Korean (eum, dark, shady), which is particularly close in pronunciation to the Burmese).
