Etymology

From Old Georgian ზოგი (zogi, “some; half”), borrowed from Old Armenian զոյգ (zoyg).[1] The word itself has gone through multiple languages, including Classical Syriac ܙܘܓܐ (zawgāʾ), while ultimately being of Greek origin, from Ancient Greek ζυγόν (zugón) or ζεῦγος (zeûgos), from Proto-Indo-European *yugóm (“yoke”).
