Earlier form was *ჰიბერ (*hiber), *ჰბერ (*hber). Its newer form is represented by ივერია (iveria), influenced by the corresponding sound change in Greek. For the sound change compare the Greek names of Βασίλειος (Basíleios) and Βασίλειος (Vasíleios).
