Etymology

Akin to Laz მალაღუდე (malağude), მალაღური (malağuri), Mingrelian მალაღური (malaɣuri).

Probably a derivative of ლეღვი (leɣvi, “fig”) (itself umlauted from an earlier *ლაღვ- (*laɣv-)) due to bird's fondness of eating figs: compare dialectal მე-ლეღვ-ია (me-leɣv-ia, “golden oriole”), Laz მა-ლუღ-ე (ma-luğ-e), Mingrelian მა-ლუღ-ია (ma-luɣ-ia), all of which are transparently derived from fig.

Typologically compare Middle Armenian թզկերուկ (tʻzkeruk, literally “fig-eater”).
