Learned borrowing from Old Georgian სენაკი (senaḳi) (which later developed into სენაჲ (senay)), together with Old Armenian սենեակ (seneak) borrowed from Iranian. Cognate with Mingrelian სანაკი (sanaḳi). Doublet of სენა (sena).
