From Old Khmer ថ្នល (thnal), ត្នល (tnal), ត្នល្ល (tnall), ត្នោល (tnol), ថ្នោល (thnol, “access, especially causeway, inlet, or road over an embankment”). Cognate with Thai ถนน (tà-nǒn), Lao ຖະໜົນ (tha non).

By surface analysis, derived from ដល់ (dɑl, “to arrive”) with infixed -n- (instrumental).
