From Proto-Austroasiatic *ɟrla(ː)ʔ (“thorn”), an infixed form of *ɟlaʔ (“thorn”). Cognate with Bahnar jơla and Old Mon jirla (“thorn”) (modern Mon ဓလ (həlɛ̀ˀ, “thorn”).
