Compare Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer *ក្បិត៑ (*kpit, to press down on; to close; to shut in) that was expanded as កំបិត៑ (kaṃpit, one who is shut in), Angkorian Old Khmer បិត៑ (pit), បិត្ត៑ (pitt), Northern Khmer เบฺิ็ด.

Or it just possibly borrowed from Thai ปิด (bpìt).
