Inherited from Middle Khmer លេក (leka), លើក (lœka) (attested in 1378-1477 as leka and became lœka around 1671), from Old Khmer លេក៑ (lek) (first attested in 578-677), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *ləək (“to lift, raise”). Cognate with Thai เลิก (lə̂ək), Lao ເລີກ (lœ̄k), Northern Thai ᩃᩮᩥ᩠ᨠ.
