  • 《汉语拼音方案》 (Hànyǔ Pīnyīn Fāng'àn, Scheme for the Chinese Phonetic Alphabet) specifies that , ĉ, ŝ and ŋ may be used as abbreviations for zh, ch, sh and ng respectively, though these are rarely used in practice.
