See potential cognates outside of Yoruboid, Ukaan ɛ̀-ʃú, Nupe etsú. Also possibly from ụ̀- (“nominalizing prefix”) + sụn (“to cry”), literally “that which cries”, which may refer to the loud crying that it produces
