ἀγχίλωψ

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Has been proposed to derive from ἄγχι (ánkhi, near) or ἄγχω (ánkhō, I squeeze, strangle) + ὤψ (ṓps, eye). Beekes argues for a Pre-Greek origin; compare αἰγίλωψ (aigílōps) in the sense of lachrymal fistula.
