ἀποκτείνω

Ancient Greek

Etymology

From ἀπο- (apo-) +‎ κτείνω (kteínō, to kill).

Pronunciation

Verb

ἀποκτείνω • (apokteínō)

  1. to kill, slay
  2. to condemn, put to death (judicial)

Inflection

The passive forms are late; in the classical language they are suppleted by the corresponding active forms of ἀποθνῄσκω (apothnēískō). However, the aorist middle ἀπέκτατο (apéktato) is used with passive meaning in Homer.
